The pomerian refer to one of the breeds of dogs that are classified under Spitz group of dogs. The shortened for Pom is often used when referring to Blue Pomeranian Puppies and dogs. The place of origin of the breed is the region located in north-east Germany and north-west Poland. This region of Central Europe is referred to as Pomeria region. These dogs are very small in size so that they are classified as toy dogs.

It is believed that Poms as descendants of the bigger types of Spitz dogs. The immediate ancestor of this breed is thought to be the German Spitz. Some pet clubs place German Spitz and Poms under the same category. Interestingly, they are known as dwarf spitz in some countries. Royal owners are to a large extent the ones fueling the popularity of poms. For example, the popularity of this breed rose globally when Queen Victoria owned a pom in the 18th century.

Physically, poms are very small dogs. They weigh between 1.9 and 3.5 kilograms and stand at a height of between 5 and 11 inches at the withers. The bodies are sturdy while the coat is abundantly textured. The tails are set high and flat. A ruff is formed around their necks by the out coat of hair. This is a characteristic that they are well known for. The hindquarters have feathery hair forming on the fringes.

Initially, these dogs had white coats in most cases, with a few having brown or black coats. The one that Queen Elizabeth owned was brown in color and the color became very fashionable during the early years of the 19th century. Today, poms exist in the widest range of colors. Examples of colors available include white, orange, cream, black, brown, black and tan, red, blue, brown and tan, sable, brindle, and spotted. Any mixture of the colors named above also exists.

The coat covering the bodies of pomerians is thick and double coat. The hair is easy to groom, but it is advisable to groom everyday to maintain the coat in good condition. Trimming after every 1 to 2 months is also advised. The outer coat is usually made of long, straight and harsh-textured hair. On the contrary, the inner coat is soft, thick, and short.

By nature, Pomeranians are a lively breed that likes playing a lot. They are also very friendly towards their owners. However, they have been known to show aggression against other dogs as they try to prove themselves. They remain alert to any changes that happen to the environment they live in. New stimuli usually trigger barking, which may develop into a habit of unwarranted barking.

The life expectancy of a healthy Pomeranian is between 12 and 16 years. They contract a few health conditions if they are fed on a good diet and exercised regularly. Grooming is a huge part of proper care for poms.

Attention must be drawn to the teeth, eyes, and ears during grooming since they are the ones which tend to be infected. A major problem with this breed seems to be early tooth loss. It is the reason they must be kept on a diet of dry food.
