Book lovers, who are lucky enough to own their favorites instead of borrowing them from the library, often like to show them off in bookcases and shelves. A lot of these individuals especially treasure those that are handed down from generation to generation. Most don't know whether or not their collectibles are valuable and, over time, many deteriorate. In order to keep them from getting beyond repair, owners turn to the kind of book restoration New Jersey professionals offer.

Owners can either physically bring the work to the restorer's shop or send in good photographs that show all sides of the volume. The restorer will examine the exterior and interior and do whatever research is necessary to come up with an opinion of value. After that this professional will give the owner options for restoring the work or suggest that there is not enough value to warrant an expensive restoration.

A reliable restorer should also be honest about books that are so damaged it would be impossible to recondition them and restore them to their original state. Dry rot can damage leather covers to the point they crumble when they are touched. Most restorers agree that this is permanent damage. Others will attempt to harden the fabric using a chemical solution, but that may be temporary at best.

Leather covers without a dry rot problem can often be returned to something like the original state with conditioning. Deteriorating pages can be repaired with the use of a special tape. It will disappear if correctly applied and will not yellow over time. Pages with torn edges or missing sections may be mended using discarded volumes of the same period.

Books that have been used over the years often have stained and soiled pages. Restorers can actually clean the paper using specialized techniques. Unless the paper is very high quality, it is not cleaned with water. This is an extremely costly process that involves removing the pages from sewn binding.

Cloth covers are common, but they can be fragile and repairing them often involves placing matching cloth under the original. This can be effective, especially if stains and tears are minimal. Most owners think rebinding requires the old techniques like gluing and sewing, but many restorers prefer not to do that. They usually suggest newer methods that create stronger bindings.

Very rare books are not usually handled by general restorers. They recommend the owners contact the department head of the rare book collection at a university or major library for a referral to an expert in this field. Restoring rare bibles and bibles that have been handed through families for generations also have special requirements.

Displaying treasured family volumes is a great way to start a conversation with your children about their ancestors and the history of your family. It can be especially interesting if they are past editions of books your children are familiar with. Restoring editions to their original condition helps ensure they will be saved for future generation.
