There is a new trend where people are looking for everything natural, even in apparel. A lot of parents are choosing all natural items for their kids, especially top quality clothes made from silk, cotton and natural wool. One place that stocks this type of product is a company that sells clothing for children in Northern California. They offer a great selection of handmade accessories and clothing made in the traditional manner.

A unique decorating technique from India's thirteenth century, Kalamkari, is done using a complex process that uses a special pen called a "kalam". Used in southeastern India, this is a seventeen step process of decorating. The fabric is colored with organic dyes made from naturally-occurring metals, leaves and stems. Natural mordants, known as iron acetate or alum, help "set" the color in the material so the color does not bleed when it is washed. Craftsmen use natural items such as plants, crushed flowers and seeds to decorate the clothing.

Another precise decorating method that also has Indian origins is hand block-printing. A relatively simple but painstaking process, block-printing allows the artist to apply color in different patterns or designs. Artisans draw a design on a wooden block, using a separate block for each color. Patterns appear on the blocks as flat relief carvings, which are painted in the desired hue and placed firmly on the fabric to transfer the design.

If multiple colors are to be used, they are applied one at a time and the fabric is allowed to dry between applications. Block-printing is sometimes the only way to achieve the desired aesthetic effect on fabric. An establishment selling children's clothing in Northern California showcases block-printed items.

Ikat is a type of material that uses a resist dyeing process to make multi-colored material and designs. Each individual thread is dyed the necessary color and then woven into the design the artisan desires. The best quality of items using this technique uses two layers of ikat material. True artists make very elaborate designs.
