The medium of watercolor is traditionally used to paint realistic images. However, its fluidity and luminescent qualities have encouraged many artists to create abstracts too. Abstract watercolor painting allows creativity to be stretched to its limits and experimentation is often part of the process. Expression ranges from the fluid to the more geometric and and figurative abstractions are also depicted and it is quite hard to define as so many different styles fall under this umbrella.

Classical art required artists to recreate faithful representations of their subject. Abstract art, instead of creating exact replicas of what is seen, rather conveys a sense or feeling about a subject. The way in which forms, colors and lines are used is more important than representing the subject accurately.

Historically, there are a many famous artists who have experimented with abstraction. Kandinsky, a Russian, is thought to have been one of the first. He was later followed by many others. Picasso, Mark Rothko and Jackson Pollock are just a few others who developed their own unique ways of abstract painting, whether this involved painting cubes, squares or spattering drips on huge canvases.

The challenge of the artist is to create work powerful enough to move the emotions of the viewer, rather than provide a clear image. Shape, size, color, line and form all contribute to the overall impression. In the best paintings of this nature, intensive technical processes intersect with emotional expression to evoke strong feelings in the viewer. Every element, including brush strokes and color, are used deliberately.

The qualities of watercolors have to be understood in order to create the different effects. There are basic techniques that have to be mastered such as using washes, working wet on dry and wet in wet. Learning how the water, paint and paper reacts together is essential. Layering of colors to make them more or less intense is another important technique.

Many new artists are coming up today due to easy access to classes and online courses. People can teach themselves and practice the basic skills they need to get started. Others appreciate the input of teachers with years of experience who can critique their work and help them to progress. Whatever means is chosen to learn, the fact remains that without understanding basic techniques, the attempts will be very amateurish at best.

However, at the same time, there are many talented artists coming to the fore and many of them are displaying their work online. This makes it possible for many art lovers to purchase work that appeals to them. The great variety available means that most people can find something to suit their taste without necessarily having to spend a fortune.

There has been a rise in popularity of watercolors in recent years. Artists enjoy the option it gives them to experiment. They do not always have to buy expensive canvases. There are many different types of paper that can be used and myriads of ways in which the paints can be used. The popularity of this art form is sure to continue for many years to come.
